यह कहानी भगवान महावीर के कठिन अभिग्रह की घटना पर आधारित है। पाँच माह से अधिक समय तक वे भिक्षा के लिए घूमते रहे और स्वजनों-मित्रों के मनुहार को अस्वीकार करते रहे। अन्त में बेड़ियों में जकड़ी, मुंडित, उपवासी चन्दना के पास पहुँचकर भी अभिग्रह अधूरा देख लौट पड़े; तभी चन्दना की आँखों से आँसू ढुलक पड़े।
