लेख उस पाश्चात्य धारणा का खण्डन करता है कि सभी भारतीय दर्शन उपनिषदों से निकले हैं। लेखक भारतीय दर्शन की तीन स्वतन्त्र धाराएँ बताता है — ब्राह्मण परम्परा का आत्मवाद, बौद्ध परम्परा का अनात्मवाद और जैन परम्परा का स्याद्वाद। अद्वैत वेदान्त, सांख्य, न्याय-वैशेषिक और बौद्ध मतों से तुलना कर जैन दृष्टि की विशिष्टता दिखाई गई है।
