देवगढ़ जैसे महत्त्वपूर्ण पर उपेक्षित क्षेत्र ‘बूढ़ी चंदेरी’ की ३० अप्रैल १९२४ की अपनी यात्रा का वर्णन करते हुए वर्णीजी वहाँ के भग्न कोटों और पत्थरों के ढेरों में उकेरी मनोज्ञ जिनप्रतिमाओं का हाल बताते हैं, समाज की उदासीनता पर खेद प्रकट करते हैं और क्षेत्र-रक्षा तथा पुरातत्त्व-विभाग खोलने का आग्रह करते हैं।
