लेखक बताता है कि बचपनमें जीवन आनन्दमय लगता है, पर प्रौढ़ अनुभूति उसे दुःखमय, अनित्य और मृत्युसे घिरा दिखाती है। यही अनुभूति वैदिक, औपनिषद, बौद्ध, जैन आदि सभी धर्ममार्गोंकी जननी रही है। दुःखसे भागनेके बजाय उसके कारणोंपर आत्मचिन्तन करनेसे ही धर्ममार्ग मिलता है; जैसे कमलका मूल पंकमें, वैसे धर्मका मूल दुःखमें छिपा है।
