रमेशचन्द्र शर्मा जैन मूर्तिकला के आरम्भ का ऐतिहासिक विवेचन करते हैं। परम्परा आदिकाल से मूर्तिपूजा मानती है, पर पुरातात्त्विक साक्ष्य के रूप में वे लोहानीपुर की मौर्यकालीन नग्न मूर्ति, खारवेल के हाथीगुम्फा अभिलेख, कौटिल्य के उल्लेख, मथुरा के आयागपट और देवनिर्मित स्तूप को प्रारम्भिक प्रमाण मानकर उनका काल-निर्धारण करते हैं।
