Sikdar places the Jaina view of sound among five Indian positions: the Samkhya tanmatra, the Vaibhasika class of rupa, the Nyaya-Vaisesika quality of ether and the Bhatta substance. For the Jainas sound is a modification of matter produced when molecules strike, developed from Umasvati to Vidyananda.
