साध्वी मंजुला बताती हैं कि शब्दों का भी इतिहास होता है और साहित्य उसे जानने का सर्वोत्तम माध्यम है। आर्य शब्द आज एक जाति-विशेष के अर्थ में रूढ़ हो गया है, पर जैन आगमों में यह बहुत व्यापक अर्थ में प्रयुक्त हुआ। सूत्रकृतांग, दशवैकालिक आदि से आर्य, अनार्य और अज्ज शब्दों के प्रयोग उद्धृत कर उसका अर्थ-विकास दिखाया गया है।
