इस कथा में भरत और बाहुबली के युद्ध का सजीव चित्रण है। दृष्टियुद्ध, शब्दयुद्ध, मुष्टियुद्ध और मल्लयुद्ध—सबमें बाहुबली विजयी होते हैं, पर भरत पराजय स्वीकार नहीं करते। अग्रज को कष्ट देने पर बाहुबली का मन खिन्न होता है और वे राज्य-लिप्सा की निस्सारता समझकर वैराग्य की ओर मुड़ते हैं; जो कर्म में शूर है वही धर्म में भी शूर है।
