कलकत्ता में इस वर्ष महावीर जयंती व्यापक रूप में मनाई गई। मुर्शिदाबाद संघ की अपील पर बाजार बंद रहे, भारत जैन महामण्डल ने जैन कला प्रदर्शनी आयोजित की जिसका उद्घाटन केन्द्रीय मंत्री अशोक सेन ने किया, और सप्ताह भर के कार्यक्रमों में विभिन्न विद्वानों व नेताओं ने महावीर के अहिंसा और अपरिग्रह के संदेश पर विचार रखे।
