Pandya separates the senses of samjna in Jaina sources. The Bhagavati and Prajnapana list ten instinctive samjnas; later usage makes it abhisandharana, matijnana, samyagjnana or srutajnana; finally it settles as mental cognition, and only that last sense distinguishes samjni beings from asamjni ones.
