Vaidya traces the word supa, the broth of pulses, through Sanskrit lexicons and ayurvedic texts: the nirukti sobhana apo'smin, the cooks called supakara, andhasika and audanika, Bhavamisra on the qualities of each pulse, and the distinction between manda, rice water, and supya, the water of pulses.
