Valmiki was a contemporary of Rama and he depicted the life of Rama as he interpreted. Though the form selected by Valmiki was a narrative epic, Rama's life proved very effective for a drama, because conflict, external or internal, is the essence of drama.

Shukla follows Sītā's three rejections in the Rāmāyaṇa (at Laṅkā, at Ayodhyā, and at the horse sacrifice) from Vālmīki into Sanskrit plays down to the seventeenth century. She quotes Rāma's harsh verses at Laṅkā and asks how dramatists handled the conflict of love and duty.
