लेखक सजीव और निर्जीव पदार्थोंके भेदसे आरम्भ कर सिद्ध करते हैं कि चेतना जड़ पदार्थका गुण नहीं, आत्माका स्वाभाविक गुण है। तूतिया, गन्धकके तेजाब और जल जैसे रासायनिक उदाहरणोंसे वे बताते हैं कि मूल द्रव्योंके गुण कभी नष्ट नहीं होते। इन्द्रियोंके अनुसार चेतनाके क्रमिक विकासकी तुलना जैन शास्त्रोंकी 'ऊर्ध्वगति' से की गई है।
