समाजमें अति-समता और अति-विषमता दोनों हानिकारक हैं। लेखक रूसका उदाहरण देते हैं, जहाँ भी वेतनमें सोलह गुने तकका अन्तर है, जबकि भारतमें यह अन्तर चार सौ गुने तक है। श्रम, योग्यता और सेवाके अनुरूप पुरस्कार न मिलनेसे उत्साह घटता है, अतः वे निरतिवादी अर्थात् सन्तुलित और न्यायोचित समताका समर्थन करते हैं।
