उप्रेति चौबीस विभागों में पुराणों का सर्वेक्षण करते हैं, देवीभागवत को महापुराण सिद्ध करते हैं किन्तु भागवत को सर्वोपरि मानते हैं, उन्हें वेदकालीन ठहराते हैं और जैन तथा बौद्ध पुराणों का भी परिचय देते हैं। बेटाई उन्हें निर्भीक और स्पष्ट कहते हैं, पर अठारह महापुराणों का विस्तृत विवेचन चाहते हैं। Upreti surveys the Purāṇas in twenty-four short sections, claims the Devībhāgavata as a mahāpurāṇa while still holding the Bhāgavata supreme, dates the Purāṇas to the Vedic age, and notices the Jain and Buddhist ones. Betai calls him fearless and clear.
