Betai studies vipralambha, love in separation, as the ground of pathos in Sanskrit poetry. Opening from Aja's lament in the Raghuvaṃśa and Bhavabhūti's line that consciousness exists to feel sorrow, he argues that separation, not union, gives śṛṅgāra its depth and its hold on the reader.
