चन्द्र उस 'य' श्रुति का समर्थन करते हैं जो मध्यवर्ती व्यंजन के लोप के बाद उद्वृत्त स्वर के स्थान पर आती है। हेमचन्द्र नियम देते हैं, चण्ड अधूरा, वररुचि मौन; किन्तु भरत, पालि, अशोक-लेख, खरोष्ठी तथा गुफा-अभिलेख इसे प्रमाणित करते हैं। जैनेतर प्राकृत प्रतियों में इसका अभाव भाषाकीय कृत्रिमता है। Chandra defends the ya-shruti that fills the hiatus left when an intervocalic stop is lost. Hemachandra states the rule, Chanda half of it, Vararuchi nothing; yet Bharata, Pali, Ashokan, Kharoshthi and cave inscriptions attest it. Its absence from non-Jain Prakrit manuscripts is editorial artifice.
