KUMĀRA-PĂLA-DEVA IN DŪTĀNGADA OF SUBHAȚA A CRITICAL REVIEW¹ Sudarshan Kumar Sharma² 8 • Dūtāngada of Subhata containing fiftysix verses commencing with two benedictory verses and a regular Prologue refers to the Parisad of Mahārājādhirāja-śrīmat-tribhuvanapāladeva as ordaining the poet to take up the task of initiating a play which has been called as “chāyā-nātaka” by the

Sharma disputes the accepted dating of Subhaṭa's one-act chāyā-nāṭaka Dūtāṅgada to 1243, against De, Keith, Winternitz and Krishnamachariar. Since Someśvara's Kīrti-Kaumudī already praises Subhaṭa, he places the poet in the twelfth century under a Mahārājādhirāja Tribhuvanapāladeva ruling near Vāgaḍa, the Caulukya Kumārapāla being then still a prince.
