In the Prologue to his play Malavikagnimitram Kalidasa has referred to his illustrious forerunners in the line - 'Prathitayasasam Bhasa-Kaviputra-Saumillakadinam prabandhanatikramya varttamanaKaveh Kalidasasya kriyayam katham parisado bahumanah'.

Sharma re-examines the compound in the prologue to the Mālavikāgnimitra naming Kālidāsa's predecessors. He sets out the variant orders in printed editions, dissolves the compound several ways, and asks whether Kaviputra is a poet in his own right, a son of Bhāsa, or a son of Saumilla.
