उपाध्याय अमरमुनि बाहुबली को करुणा की मूर्ति के रूप में प्रस्तुत करते हैं। भरत की अधीनता अस्वीकार करने पर जब दोनों सेनाएँ आमने-सामने थीं, तब बाहुबली के मन में स्वयं करुणा उमड़ी—इन्द्र की प्रेरणा से नहीं, जैसा आवश्यक चूर्णि भी कहती है। लाखों सैनिकों का संहार रोकने हेतु उन्होंने दोनों भाइयों के बीच द्वन्द्वयुद्ध का प्रस्ताव रखा, जिससे हिंसा सीमित हो गई।
