Sharma traces the Advaitic sat, which is neither the reality of worldly objects nor sheer non-being. He follows the word through the Ṛgveda, the Brāhmaṇas, Āraṇyakas, Upaniṣads, Gītā and Yogavāsiṣṭha, and argues that Śaṅkara alone gave it doctrinal shape, with māyā, against Buddhist criticism of Upaniṣadic being.
